What is NEMS?
NEMS is an acronym for neuromuscular electrostimulation, and, although it sounds ultramodern, this physical treatment has been around since the late 1700’s.
Originally used as a means to reduce pain, today NEMS is also used in the arenas of elite athleticism, intensive care units in hospitals, and even weight loss clinics. The theory behind NEMS is relatively simple. |
An electric current is
delivered to cause muscle contraction with no output of force from the
individual. Different voltages cause different kinds and intensities of contraction, and illicit responses in the brain and spinal cord as well as the muscles.
How does it work?
With NEMS, an electrical current is passed to the muscle via electrode pads that are placed on the skin. This causes the muscle contract, or work. In situations where the muscle could not otherwise function, or functions poorly, the electrical impulse takes the place of voluntary contraction.
In any instance where forced inactivity is present, for example due to nerve damage or surgery, this treatment is proven to prevent the atrophication of affected muscle groups.
With NEMS, muscle mass and strength can be maintained during recovery , as well as joint mobility.

But I’m not injured!
Increasingly, NEMS is used as a sports training tool, helping athletes improve their performance and increase their strength.
By isolating muscles in this way, NEMS can help to teach the athlete how to more effectively use their body, as well as increase the range of motion of surrounding joints. With NEMS, a heightened awareness of the muscular functioning brings the athlete into greater synch with their training movements. This understanding, along with the benefit of muscular and neural adaptations that also evolve with treatment, can bring about great advances in athletic performance. |

Whether you are in a situation of rehabilitation or are in good health, NEMS could be a tools that’s beneficial to your goals. You don’t need to lose quad strength while recovering from knee surgery, or wait months to use your biceps after an injury.
An imbalance in calf size can be addressed this way too. With NEMS, your Jasper chiropractor can also test for muscle efficiency, and make suggestions to help you achieve improved performance.
If you are interested in being in peak condition this is something for you to try. Book in for a consultation and check it out!
