Myth busting chiropractic style

Chiropractic care has been around for ages - literally. Writings about spinal manipulation to ease back pain can be traced back to ancient China and Greece. Hippocrates himself recognized the importance of a healthy spine for overall health.

Over more recent years, however, myths about chiropractic care have emerged that we think might be causing some confusion for those unfamiliar with what Doctors of Chiropractic do. So, as the unofficial Mythbusters of Jasper Chiropractic, we’d like to take some time here to dispel them.

Myth: Chiropractors aren’t real doctors

To become a Chiropractor, you must complete a minimum of seven years of accredited post-secondary education. The last two years of your study involve participating in supervised clinical training.

Alberta Doctors of Chiropractic are recognized and regulated under the province’s Health Professions Act. The same act that regulates medical doctors, dentists and optometrists. Chiropractors are a part of your health care team.

Myth: You shouldn’t let a chiropractor touch your neck

There is scientific evidence to support the validity and safety of chiropractic neck adjustments. In fact, neck adjustments are performed well within the normal range of motion of your head. During a chiropractic neck adjustment, your neck is moved less than what it would take for you to to look over your shoulder.

A neck adjustment can improve the mobility of your cervical discs restoring a healthy range of motion, increasing the ability of the adjoining muscles to move, and relieving the pressure and tension that can build up with impaired spinal function.

Myth: A chiropractic adjustment can be painful

For the most part, chiropractic adjustments do not hurt. In fact, many people feel immediate relief of their symptoms.

Some people may feel sore after an adjustment, but this feeling is typically due to short-lived muscle soreness - similar to what you might feel after a workout or exercise.

Myth: The cracking sound you hear during an adjustment is the snapping of your bones

Interestingly, your bones have nothing at all to do with it. The sound is the result of gas releasing from the joint. Scientific research shows us that this is not harmful.

When your Jasper or Hinton chiropractor performs an adjustment, the pressure in the joint cavity is released as the surfaces of the bones are separated, and gas trapped in your synovial fluid is set free, forming a space that collapses back upon itself. That’s what causes the clicking sound. Over the space of a few seconds to a few hours, the gas is slowly reabsorbed back into the joint.

Myth: Chiropractic treatment can only relieve back pain

Chiropractors are musculoskeletal specialists. They are trained to diagnose and care for problems throughout your musculoskeletal system - bones, muscles, joints, cartilage, and connective tissues.

Issues such as tendonitis, osteoarthritis, sports injuries and chronic pain throughout your body can benefit from Jasper and Hinton chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic fact versus fiction

Could chiropractic treatment help you?

The chiropractic approach to healthcare is one that’s  drug-free, and hands-on, including examination, diagnosis and treatment.

Through their broad range of skills and training, your chiropractor is able to treat you with the in-office care, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, and nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling that can help you get back on two strong, balanced feet.
